“The Psychological Effects Of Heavy Metal Music”

Heavy metal is one of the most popular music in all over the world. The melody of the guitars and heavy rhythms are attractive for many people. Although this music is common everywhere in the world, there are some concerns of harmful effect of the metal music.

For many years, there are studies conducted to find some significant result of listening metal music. Iowa State University claimed that listening heavy metal leads to re-occur depressive and anti-social feelings and thoughts. Researches of the Donald F. support this hypothesis with finding of his researchers. According to his findings, people who suffered from depression or suicide before are more likely to influence negatively from metal music.

The other concern is communication between society and peers of heavy metal fans. Parents and society worry about the teenagers who listen metal music many of their time and the idea which cause uncomfortable feelings of parents is, their probability of being an introvert and anti-social person. However researches which are conducted in Iowa University, show that there is no significant relationship between anti-social personality and being a fan of heavy metal.

People prefer listening different kind of music in their different kind of moods. Heavy metal music is highly related with depressive mood because of the sound of music. A really good study which was conducted by Shaleen L. Coss at Loyola University, show the relationship between depression and listening heavy metal music. The outcome of the study is, participants who listen non-violent songs feel more depressed than the participants who listen heavy metal. It is believed that heavy metal provides people coping with stress subconsciously and also it helps to decrease level of desire to be violent.

Christenson and van Nouhuys(1995) claimed that students who have low academic skills in school, commonly prefer listening heavy metal music and he supported his hypothesis with his research. The outcome of the study shows that students who listen metal music have more trouble with teachers than other students who prefer listening other kind of music.

Overall, like every other kind of music, heavy metal has some influence on peoples’ behaviour as well. But there are highly significant individual differences. It may cause aggressive behaviour in some people and it may provide relaxation after listening metal music in some people. Even researches find some answers there are no certain results for the harmful effect of heavy metal music.

  1. Heavy metal music is said that its “harsh sound” has made it a target of many behavioural and psychological problems within teenagers and young adults; it is often associated with depression, aggression and anger. This is the government’s way of putting blame on something else, rather than themselves for young people’s state of mind in the current society. The statement that heavy metal music causes psychological problems is not supported by sound evidence.

Radcoy and Boyle (1997) researched into the different physiological response certain types of music have on people’s mood. Their findings suggested that music can elicit different types of response feelings, including happiness, sadness, relaxation, frustration and aggression. Radcoy and Boyle proposed that the feelings are indeed conjured by previous experience of that particular music, and suggested that heavy metal causing aggression is not in fact implausible, the aggression within that individual may have been present before the heavy metal music was presented. I agree with Radcoy and Boyle, if aggression is present within the person to begin with, it may well be amplified by the music itself. Having said this, some studies have found that people who were angry at first were in fact happier, calmer and more relaxed after listening to heavy metal music, when this music is their usual genre.

I would not think that all teenagers who are depressed or commit suicide listen to heavy metal. Therefore, heavy metal along with grunge and rock music is NOT the primary cause of psychological problems within teenagers and young adults today.

  11. i taught your grandmother to SUCK eggs

  12. i have pesonally observed that listening to heavy metal leads someone dare to do something in every field. Some people like me find pleasure while listening to them, it not becoz only of their loud and deadly sounds but also their lyrics, it really made me energetic. it poked me living with the thought of ownself. These days i m deadly addicted with this, i can easily roll a week without masturbation but i found hard living without musics for about 3 days. Thats all,…

  13. Hip hop makes me irritated and want to go violent

  14. It’s remarkable to go to see this website and reading the
views of all colleagues regarding this paragraph, while I am also eager
    of getting familiarity.

  15. Greetings from Florida! I’m bored to tears at work so I decided to check out your website on my iphone
during lunch break. I really like the information you provide here and can’t
wait to take a look when I get home. I’m amazed at how fast your blog loaded on my mobile ..
I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyways, superb blog!

  16. i believe that, although this study sounds legitimate, people can respond to different genres of music differently according to the person. i think that different response feelings can be triggered, such as feelings like happiness, sadness, relaxation, frustration and aggression. I dont think that an experiment or science can prove my theory, but it certainly hasn’t proven theirs.

  17. Metal is a broad category. Dragonforce is metal, and Through the Fire and Flames is very uplifting. Give folk metal a try, like Eluveitie.

  18. Hello, i think that i noticed you visited my site thus i came to go back
the desire?.I am trying to to find things
to enhance my site!I guess its good enough to use a few of your ideas!!

  19. You should really read what you’re posting, so many incomplete sentences.

  20. Greate pieces. Keep writing such kind of information on your blog.
    Im really impressed by it.
Hey there, You’ve performed an excellent job. I’ll certainly digg it and for my part recommend to my friends.

I’m confident they’ll be benefited from this web site.

  21. I found this page of some interest. I introduced myself to classic metal (AC*DC, Metallica, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Def Lepard, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Ozborne, Bon Jovi, and ZZ Top) when I was 9 years old. As I started getting older, I rapidly engaged in heavier, louder, and more or less popular metal (Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Pantera, and Volbeat). This change, as I see it now happened very fast because it was only a two year time span. Right after I turned 14, I got my hands on some really heavy stuff such as: Five Finger Death Punch, King 810, Disturbed, Slipknot, Death, and Dope. Ever since I was 8, I have been depressed because of a broken family and no friends. This is why I introduced myself to metal.

There was several things on this site that I could relate to. Metal calms me down in a way. In basic terms, it lessens the hate, rage, and violent thoughts that are my internal. The problem is, as this website says, I think that the music does provoke anti-socialism. Don’t get me wrong when I say this because I am not saying that I don’t want friends, I would like that very much. I just can’t get them though.

It is easy to say this because all I’m doing is pecking at a broken, bloodstained keyboard. Thoughts of suicide are always in the air, the scars on my wrists cannot help but accumulate. I don’t know why I even try.
Should I end it now, or do I have anything to lose. I am now 15 as of December 9th, but there is no rejoyce. One year closer to demise as I see it.

To the people who made this website, I apologize for my selfness in writing this, but my own self is all I have, and sometimes I don’t even think I have that. If anyone anywhere would please respond, do.

  22. I listen to heavy metal every day, and I’m a successful student, I don’t think that there is a true correlation between that, as I have some friends that have equal or even more success than me and love heavy metal as much as me. The only psychological effect that I feel getting from metal is happiness and excitement and the feeling that my nerves are calming

  30. Good job!

  31. Not gonna lie, this is incredibly inaccurate. I’m a total metalhead, and metal makes me super calm and it’s helped bring me out of depression several times. It doesn’t make me antisocial in any way because when I listen to metal, it’s gets my blood pumping and it puts me in a really good mood so I become MORE outgoing. When I listen to metal, it doesn’t make me act or feel like anything like what this article says. It’s makes me feel quite the comtrary.

  32. Very interesting way to put it! Thank you!

  33. We understand that music addiction works as a surrogate for lack of human bonds. Music can pierce the heart directly; it needs no mediation. Regular Bass House mixtapes posted each and every Wednesday. Hear us out on MySpace!
